BMW 3 Series Oil Change DIY: E90, F30, and G20 Complete Guide for US Owners

BY CHEAPEUROPARTS EDITORIAL TEAM2024-11-105 min read

The BMW 3 Series is the most popular European luxury sedan on American roads. Yet many US owners are shocked when their BMW dealership quotes $180–$250 for a simple oil change. With the right oil and a few tools from Amazon, you can do the same job for $60–$90 and learn exactly what's going into your engine.

This guide covers three generations: the beloved E90 (2006–2011), the sporty F30 (2012–2018), and the current G20 (2019+). All are common sights at US dealerships and independent shops.

Why BMW Oil Changes Cost More

BMW engines use full synthetic 5W-30 LL-01 specification oil — not the cheap $25 oil change variety. The N52, N55, and B58 engines also use a cartridge-style oil filter (not a spin-on canister), requiring a 36mm cap wrench specific to BMW. These quirks explain dealer markup — but they're easy to handle yourself.

What You'll Need

Choosing the Right BMW Oil

This is critical. BMW requires LL-01 certified full synthetic oil. Using the wrong spec can void your CPO warranty and cause long-term engine damage. The most widely available LL-01 options on Amazon USA:

How Much Oil Does My BMW 3 Series Need?

  • E90 325i/328i (N52 engine): 6.5 quarts with filter
  • F30 328i (N20 engine): 5.3 quarts with filter
  • F30 335i (N55 engine): 6.9 quarts with filter
  • G20 330i (B48 engine): 5.3 quarts with filter
  • G20 M340i (B58 engine): 6.9 quarts with filter

Always start with less and check the dipstick — overfilling is just as bad as underfilling.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Warm the Engine

Run the engine for 3–4 minutes so the oil warms slightly and flows more easily. Don't overheat — just enough to warm the oil.

2. Jack Up and Support the Car

The E90 has plastic undertray panels. Use the jack points at the front subframe corners. On F30/G20, use the reinforced jack point markers cast into the sill. Use jack stands — never work under a car on a floor jack alone.

3. Remove the Undertray

E90: 8 plastic clips, removed with a flat-head screwdriver. F30/G20: Multiple T25 Torx screws and plastic push-pins. Remove the panel and set it aside.

4. Drain the Oil

Position your drain pan under the oil drain plug. On the E90, the drain plug takes a 17mm hex (Allen) key. On the F30/G20, it's a 17mm hex. Loosen counter-clockwise, then spin out by hand — be ready for the flow when the plug clears the last thread.

US Tip: Most AutoZone, O'Reilly, and Advance Auto stores accept used oil for recycling at no charge. Transfer your used oil to a sealed jug — many come labeled for recycling.

5. Replace the Drain Plug Washer

BMW recommends replacing the copper or aluminum drain plug gasket every oil change. The replacement gaskets typically come with the OEM filter kit. Torque the drain plug to 18 ft-lbs (E90) or 17 ft-lbs (F30/G20).

6. Remove and Replace the Oil Filter

The filter housing is on top of the engine (E90) or accessible from underneath (F30/G20). Use your 36mm cap wrench to loosen the cap counter-clockwise. Remove the old filter element — it's inside the canister. Note: oil will drip when you open this. Have a rag ready. Install the new filter element and new O-ring (should come with the filter kit). Torque the cap to 18 ft-lbs.

7. Add New Oil

Remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine (large plastic cap). Pour in oil using your long-neck funnel. Add 1 quart less than the total capacity to start.

8. Check the Level

Wait 2 minutes for oil to settle. Check the dipstick (E90) or oil level monitor on the iDrive screen (F30/G20). Bring the level to the middle of the hash marks, not the max line.

9. Reset the Service Indicator

  • E90: Turn ignition to ACC (don't start engine), press and hold the trip reset button until the oil can icon flashes. Release and hold again.
  • F30/G20: Settings → Service → Reset Oil Service in the iDrive menu. Alternatively, a $25 OBD2 reader from Amazon can reset service indicators via the Carly or BimmerCode app.

Total Cost Breakdown

| Item | Cost | |------|------| | 6 quarts LL-01 oil | $42–$55 | | OEM filter kit | $18–$28 | | 36mm wrench (one-time) | $12 | | Total first time | ~$75–$95 | | Total after first time | ~$60–$83 |

Compare that to $180–$250 at a dealer. You'll break even on tools after two oil changes.
