Audi A4 Spark Plug Replacement: DIY Guide for US B8 and B9 Owners

BY CHEAPEUROPARTS EDITORIAL TEAM2024-11-055 min read

Spark plugs on the Audi A4 are a critical service item often skipped by US owners because dealer quotes can reach $300–$500 for the job. The truth? With a few Amazon-available tools and the correct NGK or Bosch plugs, this is a 45-minute job that any mechanically confident American can handle in a standard two-car garage.

B8 vs B9: What's Different?

The B8 A4 (2009–2016) uses 2.0T TFSI engines (CAEB, CDNB, or CPMA codes). The B9 A4 (2017–2024) uses the updated 2.0 TFSI EA888 Gen 3B. Both use 4-cylinder engines with coil-on-plug ignition. The B8's plugs are slightly more accessible; the B9 requires removing a plastic intake manifold cover.

Service interval: Audi specifies 40,000 miles, but many US enthusiasts prefer 20,000–30,000 miles for optimal performance given American fuel quality and driving patterns.

What You'll Need

Choosing the Right Spark Plugs

The correct plug for the B8 2.0T TFSI is the NGK PZFR5D-11 (iridium). For the B9, use NGK 94201 (iridium laser). Pre-gapped from the factory to 0.039–0.043 inches (1.0–1.1mm) — verify before installation. Avoid copper plugs; the Audi 2.0T requires iridium or platinum for the full 40k service interval.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Let the Engine Cool

Never work on a hot engine. Warm spark plug threads in a cold aluminum head can seize or strip. Let the engine cool at least 30 minutes.

2. Remove the Engine Cover

On both B8 and B9, there's a plastic engine cover held by 2–4 T20/T25 Torx screws, plus press-fit clips. Remove screws, then lift the cover straight up.

3. Label and Disconnect Ignition Coils

You'll see four black coil packs (one per cylinder) with attached wiring harness connectors. Press the tab on each connector and pull. Label or photograph their positions. Remove each coil by pulling straight up — they can stick, so a gentle twist helps.

4. Blow Out the Plug Wells

Before removing a plug, use compressed air or a duster can to blow any debris out of the plug wells. Debris falling into a cylinder when the plug is removed can cause serious damage.

5. Remove Old Spark Plugs

Attach your spark plug socket to the 6-inch extension and ratchet. Lower it carefully into the plug well until it seats on the plug hex. Turn counter-clockwise. The plugs should break free with moderate force. Once loose, spin them out by hand.

6. Inspect the Old Plugs

Normal wear: light tan or gray color on the ceramic insulator. Black/sooty = possible rich running or oil burning. White/blistered = lean or overheating. If you see oil fouling, investigate further before reinstalling new plugs.

7. Prepare and Install New Plugs

Check the gap with a feeler gauge. NGK pre-gaps accurately, but always verify. Apply a thin film of anti-seize to the first 2–3 threads only (not required if plugs are already coated). Hand-thread each plug in carefully to avoid cross-threading. Thread completely in by hand before applying a wrench.

8. Torque to Spec

Torque plugs to 17.6 ft-lbs (24 Nm) on B8 and B9 engines. Do not over-torque — the aluminum head threads are unforgiving.

9. Apply Dielectric Grease to Coil Boots

Put a small amount of dielectric grease on the inside of each coil boot (the rubber end that slides over the plug). This prevents them from sticking to the plug for the next 30,000 miles.

10. Reinstall Coils and Cover

Press each coil back onto its plug until you feel/hear it click. Reconnect the wiring harness connectors. Reinstall the engine cover.

11. Test Drive

Start the engine and listen for smooth idle. Take a short test drive. If you notice misfires (rough idle, hesitation), double-check that all coil connectors are fully seated.

Cost Summary

A dealer charges $300–$500 for this job. Parts from Amazon: $40–$60 for 4 plugs. The tools you'll own forever. Total DIY cost first time: $80–$130. Second time: $40–$60.
